I took this photo in Germany last summer. The green of the surroundings and the dreary day dominate the photo, and almost make the figure (my sister) in the background blend in. My sister's presence is not the immediate focal point of the picture, and that makes it more meaningful to me. First someone looks at the glistening wet stones on the right, and the falling off of the cliff on the left. THEN they notice her.
Similarly, this photo on the right focuses in on a lone figure that is walking in the snow. The main difference is that the figure in the bottom picture is the first thing that your eye looks at.
Both pictures give the feeling of being alone in wilderness, within a power much greater than your own. They are calming to me, because they remind me of times when I'm able to think about everything that is important me, without interruption from other people or electronics.
